Training A GP

Involvement of Abbey House Medical Practice

The practice participates in the General Practice Vocational Training Scheme, whereby fully qualified doctors wishing to enter general practice receive three years’ further training. From time to time one of these doctors (GP registrars) will be based here for a period of up to 12 months and will be available for consultations. Dr Maxwell, Dr Somerset and Dr Cole are the qualified trainers.

As part of this learning process, your own GP or the GP registrar may be recording his or her surgery on video. This will only be done with your consent and the process will be explained fully at the time.

The practice also regularly provides training for Medical Students.

  1. Medical School - We take Warwick, Buckingham & Oxford students
  2. Foundation Doctor (Years 1 & 2) - The practice is not involved at this stage)
  3. General Practice Training Scheme - In years 1& 2 trainees do 4 months in General Practice and 8 months in a Hospital. In year 3 they spend their whole year in General Practice.

What Do Our Trainees Do?

  • They are supervised at all times
  • Talk to their trainers and other GPs about patients seen in the practice
  • They are videoed to observe their consulting styles and get feedback on this
  • Have their trainers sit in with them to observe practice
  • They do exams in various forms which are at a national level
  • Manage a portfolio which records their learning and skills attained with a requirement for evidence that work has been completed correctly
  • Get feedback from colleagues related to their behaviour and work
  • Get feedback from patients in the form of a patient satisfaction questionnaire
  • Maintain ethical standards and behave professionally
  • Their educational progress is reviewed every 6 months by their supervisor
  • They are gradually are encouraged to act more independently as their competence increases until they are at a standard where they can practice independently
